Quick finishing drill
This quick finishing drill keeps players moving while practising dribbling at speed, a balanced turn and precise ball placement. It works well when you want competitive finishing practice without long periods waiting in line.
Setup
Use a compact area with two small goals lined up with enough space between them. Place one cone outside each goal to mark the starting point for each team.
Place the other two cones about 10 metres in front of the goals, with one forward cone aligned with each goal.
Split the players into two teams and line each team up behind its starting cone.
Equipment Needed
- 4 cones
- 2 small goals
- Minimum 2 balls
Rules & Instructions
Keep the sequence moving quickly from the dribble into the turn and finish.
- Use two teams of 5 players where possible.
- Run the drill with as few as 2 players if needed.
- Keep each team to a maximum of 5 players.
- Queue each team behind the starting cone beside its goal.
- Dribble to the forward cone about 10 metres away.
- Turn through 180 degrees on reaching the forward cone.
- Shoot at either small goal.
- Award 1 point for scoring in the goal on the player’s side.
- Award 2 points for scoring in the opposite goal.
- Return to the end of the team line after shooting.
- Continue the sequence with the next players in line.
- Play for a set time, such as 10 minutes.
- Award the win to the team with the most points at the end of the set time.
- Alternatively, use a target score instead of a set time.
- When playing multiple rounds, swap sides after each round.
- Optionally, introduce defenders to challenge the shooter.
Coaching Tips
- Make sure players keep the ball under control while dribbling at speed.
- Ask players to approach the forward cone under control and stay balanced through the turn.
- Demand a sharp 180-degree turn without losing control of the ball.
- Encourage players to move from the turn into the shot as quickly as possible.
- Emphasise precision over power when striking the ball at speed.
- Coach players to use a controlled “pass to the net” technique to guide the ball accurately towards the target.
Why It Works for Adult Amateur Teams
The drill combines dribbling at speed, turning and accurate ball placement in one repeated action. The competitive scoring system encourages players to execute quickly while still controlling where they play the ball.
The small goals provide a clear target that rewards precision rather than power. That same technique can transfer to finishing at speed, passing accurately into space, or playing the ball towards a specific target.
For adult amateur teams, the compact setup and flexible player numbers make the exercise practical when attendance or training space is limited. Coaches can quickly see whether players maintain control at speed, stay balanced through the turn and place the ball accurately under pressure.
Key Outcomes:
- Better ball control at speed
- More balanced 180-degree turns
- More precise ball placement at speed
- Quicker execution under competitive pressure
